Technical manuals attempt to explain new technology and equipment. Usually, the words need illustration. This photo is one of several illustrations used to orient owners to the location and operation of internal configuration elements -- 'switches' and 'jumpers' that change the operating behavior of this piece of equipment. Once the image is in the digital domain, its easy to provide visual 'keys' and labels for important components.

Now I'm giving away one of the 'tricks' of the business here, but this element was actually scanned, requiring several passes in a flat-bed scanner. The resulting image-files were 'knitted' together to produce a single-view of the whole circuit board. It was then treated as any other digital image, for additional image-processing, labeling and final inclusion in the document.
